General
Participation in Study Abroad is a privilege, not a right, and it is contingent on adherence to uncompromising standards of conduct and behavior. During their stay overseas, participants in Study Abroad programs are not only responsible for their own personal conduct, but for how their actions reflect on Bradley University, their state, and their country. Abuse of the hospitality of any host community, institution, or country on the part of a few can result in the loss of opportunities for many. It is important, therefore, that Study Abroad participants pay close attention to acceptable norms of conduct abroad, and that they abide by those standards. Most often, and under most circumstances, simple honesty, courtesy, restraint, and respect for the law are good guides for conduct anywhere. In addition, the BU International Programs Office has articulated a set of conduct standards for all participants, and these standards are defined in detail in registration materials and in campus and on-site orientations. Some of these standards are defined below.
Bradley University is committed to establishing an optimum learning environment for all students enrolled in its programs abroad.
Academic Expectations
Bradley University faculty-led programs abroad are primarily academic programs, and academic expectations are substantial. Every student, for example, must attend a mandatory orientation session on campus. Unexcused absence from the orientation session can result in dismissal from the program and forfeiture of the program deposit, among other consequences. While they are abroad, students must attend every class session or equivalent activity. Unexcused absence from any class session or equivalent will result in a lowering of the final grade by one letter grade. Students are not permitted to drop any class after the program’s U.S. departure date.
Alcohol and Substance Abuse
Alcohol and/or substance abuse in any form is unacceptable and will be dealt with swiftly and uncompromisingly. Bradley programs abroad are not alcohol-free. However, we cannot and will not tolerate alcohol consumption that could compromise a participant’s health, safety, or academic performance, or which could reasonably be seen to compromise the health, safety, or comfort of other members of the group. We cannot tolerate problematic, abusive, or disruptive alcohol consumption of any kind, period.
Bradley University programs abroad are absolutely zero-tolerance for substance abuse of any kind. Using illegal substances is grounds for summary disenrollment. It also puts the user at grave risk of violating criminal laws in countries we visit. Don’t do it.
To sum: all program participants must be aware that alcohol abuse, and that any use of an illegal substance, constitute a grave violation of the Code of Conduct. The consequences are that the participant will be separated from the program, will receive no refund, and will suffer the academic consequences that result. In such a case the participant will be responsible for any additional travel expenses for returning to the U.S. Whenever possible, their parents/guardians will be informed of the violation. Additional university disciplinary action may also be pursued.
Attitude
We require that Bradley Study Abroad students be aware of maintaining courteous contact with international academic colleagues; site or hotel staff members; faculty or staff at sites we visit; and all other individuals with whom the program brings us in contact. Student participants in the program are similarly required to exhibit courtesy and respect to directors, faculty, and staff of the program.
