Study Abroad

January 2007

Day 8

Paris: Yesterday was a true highlight of being in Paris, our group trip to the royal palace at Versailles! Built and developed by Louis XIV in 1661, Versailles is a mammoth palace complex just outside the city of Paris. It served as both a royal palace and retreat, designed to show the world the glory of France and the French monarchs. All classes headed off by train in the morning to begin the day exploring the massive palace, complete with literally miles of canals and gardens. The rain stopped just in time for our arrival, allowing us some beautiful walking and photo opportunities around the palace.

Work continued today here in Paris with all students excited for the upcoming independent travel days. Dr. Hertich and the French class spent the day exploring the art collections of the Louvre, while Dr, Carlson and the Art classes spent the day finishing up some class work. Today was an interesting day for the French Revolution class, as we were able to visit one of the most interesting sites in Paris.  We started the day by taking the Metro to the Hotel Invalides, originally a 17th century military hospital created by Louis XIV.  The hospital is now home to the Tomb of Napoleon as well as a museum dedicated to military history. The sheer size and grandeur of Napoleon's tomb was amazing to see in person. We were able to spend the day browsing through the collections of military antiquities all while under the shadow of Napoleon!

London: Study Abroad London-style is in full swing – classes are constantly running from lecture to theatre to exam to tour. Today’s pictures include trips to the Hampton Court Palace, a theatre production, the Tower of London, and the Tower Bridge. The graphic design class visited a London-based design company this afternoon. Pictures from that trip will be posted tomorrow.

Tomorrow also marks the last day of scheduled class activities, as students take a break from studying to explore London, Paris, Ireland, and possibly a few other nearby places of interest. Classes will resume Sunday, and continue through Thursday morning. All too soon we will be back on the plane to Chicago and it will be time for another semester to begin!
