Vienna Shines
Before coming to Vienna, I had an unsubstantiated disdain for the German language. I had ignorantly envisioned it to be nothing but gutteral, stocatto noises strung together in a sentence followed by a tapping of beer mugs and a lot of shouting....Being on the streets of Vienna has changed all of that. The language of the Viennese is lyrical, poetic, and romantic-sounding....
As we toured the city today following the "Imperial Vienna" route, it was interesting to see the contrasting architectural styles. We saw buildings dating back as far as the 1500s and much more modern buildings as well, often side by side. As our tour book explains, many of the buildings have been destroyed, or renovated or rebuilt. Thus, many of the older buildings have newer facades....
After getting lost a few more times, we finally found the Akademia der Bildenen Kunster. We got lost for about an hour trying to find the next street, but it turns out there is construction all over the area and a scaffold blocking the street name. We headed through blocks of constructiion and failed to see the Secession or missed it. We kept walking and finally found the Naschmarkt. This was probably the highlight of the whole walk. It's an outdoor food market with little outdoor cafes and restaurants. We saw pigs, buckets of pickles, and every vegetable imaginable.
