Day 7
Dublin: The last 3 days in Dublin have been jam-packed with intense experiences. Professors have intertwined lectures and assignments with the Irish experience, giving more meaning and substance to every passing moment. We toured the National Museum of Art and the National Museum of History as a group with professional guides (both were highly knowledgeable). After these tours, contemplating lectures and assigned readings builds a wonderful collage of academic thought. The museums are beautifully constructed, holding valuable relics of the past. The power of such art and historical artifacts cannot be explained. The lectures and assignments are precursors, leading to exploration outside of Dublin. Students and professors alike have left the city by trains and buses to breathe the fresh chilled air of coastal Irish towns such as Howth or Black Rock. Students are becoming more knowledgeable about the area, allowing for small and large adventures many kilometers away from Bewley’s hotel. The Irish people have been welcoming and friendly. They have a particular knack for being laid-back and calm, creating a comfortable ambiance and mood. This balance has allowed students to converse and immerse themselves in the Irish extravaganza. Don’t be surprised when some of us come back speaking in a strange foreign vernacular of the mother’s milk, having been fully assimilated into Irish culture. ~Will
London: We went to Buckingham Palace today expecting to see the changing of the guard but what we got was far more interesting. On June 2nd, there is a parade to celebrate the coronation of the queen, so the soldiers were out practicing. There were three bands and many soldiers on horseback, but unfortunately, no queen. We did get to see the soldiers in their “fuzzy” hats and a number of us got our pictures taken with some rather interesting guards. The British flag was no longer flying, indicating that the Queen was now home, but she wasn’t coming outside. After standing for 3 hours witnessing all this, students went off to class and to write their papers. As night set in, a group of students went to see the theatre performance of Wicked. ~Emily
Vienna: Class continues and the Bradley students grow more and more familiar with this beautiful city. After a tour of the Vienna State Opera house, students stop and sample Vienna's famous Mozartkugeln: delicious chocolate-covered hazlenut balls. Chocolate Mozart candies are a delicacy that no one should miss. ~Maddy
