Day 9
Vienna: As some students traveled to cities like Prague, Gmunden, and Budapest this weekend, others remained in good old Vienna. We made our way to the Naschmarkt, a farmer's market that's been around since the turn of the century. Others took an amazing cruise down the Danube river and, by the looks of things, some students got a little sun. Our education majors visited a local high school to get acquainted with the Austrian education system. In the evening, we got all dressed up for a night on the town. We were lucky enough to get tickets to the Vienna State Opera. It was an amazing performance and the perfect end to an exciting day. ~Maddy
London: Today was our second day off so we wanted it to be a relaxing one. The morning was filled with a trip to Harrods, where we indulged our shopping desires. Since we weren’t on any schedule we wandered around and found some very cute shops. Also the free time allows us to get more comfortable with the city and how to get around it. We found our way to Trafalgar Square and then to a restaurant for dinner. But after that it was back to work with essays to be written and journals to compose. We all sat in the lobby for a while and talked about the day and the places we had been. I can’t believe this experience is already more than half over. ~Emily
Dublin: The cultural differences that I experienced concerned hours of operation of business in Ireland. By American standards, hours of operation are short: often 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Sundays. The reason for these limited hours of service is due to the Irish people's personal values. The Irish respect and honor their work; however, they do not allow it to encompass their personal lives. To honor these values, the country (especially the city center of Dublin) often closes at the early time of 6 p.m. which allows employess to gather with their families for evening meals. ~Nicola
