This course will provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of economic theories of innovation. We will discuss different ways to promote innovative activity, government involvement in innovative activity, public/private partnerships, and the concept of "optimal quality." Our discussions will be complemented by visits to some of the most innovative compaines and government organizations in the world! We will be hosted by companies and organizations like Tekes, Nokia Siemens Networks, Kone, and TeliaSonera. The company visits are integral to showing the practical application of theories of innovation covered in the class. We will also have several guest lecturers, from both industry and academia, focusing on applied topics such as promoting innovative activity in different corporate settings and managing innovative activity in different cultural environments. This class will aid in your understanding of innovation, promotion of innovative activity in different cultural settings, and government policies towards innovation. At the end of the trip, you will have a solid understanding of modern innovation theory and how it is applied in practice. You will be able to think analytically using both the verbal and quantitative tools commonly employed in economics and be able to apply those tools to solve both theoretical as well as practical real-world problems.
